LESSONS FROM MY LEADERSHIP JOURNEY

Writer's picture: James RuleJames Rule

In leadership, experience is often the greatest teacher. Over my years as a Chief Executive, I encountered challenges that tested my resilience, made mistakes that taught me invaluable lessons, and discovered insights that have shaped the way I lead today. It’s this lived experience that forms the foundation of my approach to coaching, mentoring, and leadership development at The Lonely Leader.

As I shared in the latest episode of The Lonely Leader Podcast leadership is not about perfection or standing on a pedestal. It’s about learning, adapting, and growing not just for yourself but for those you lead.

In this edition of The Leadership Accelerator Newsletter I will share some of those lessons, (if you want to hear more please enjoy the podcast via the links at the foot of this text). Here are some of the key lessons I’ve taken away from my journey as a leader.

1. The Importance of Authenticity

One of the most critical lessons I’ve learned is that leadership must be authentic. People can sense when a leader is trying to be someone they’re not, and it creates a barrier to trust. Authenticity doesn’t mean having all the answers or being perfect. It means being true to who you are, owning your strengths and vulnerabilities, and leading with integrity.

When I stepped into my first CEO role, I felt the pressure to conform to my perception of a Chief Executive. Overtime I realised the power and necessity of bringing my authentic self into my leadership style.

2. The Value of Resilience

Leadership is not for the faint of heart. You will face setbacks, criticism, and moments of doubt. Resilience is what keeps you and your team moving forward, through and past those challenges.

In my journey, there were times when external factors disrupted even the best-laid plans. Resilience in leadership is not about hoping to avoid adversity but learning to thrive despite it. The development of resilience continues to be a major focus of my work with clients.

3. The Power of Listening

Early in my leadership journey, I thought being decisive meant always having the answers. I’ve since learned that some of the best decisions come from listening. Whether it’s feedback from your team, insights from stakeholders, or simply taking the time to understand different perspectives, listening is a leadership superpower.

Active listening builds stronger relationships, fosters innovation, and uncovers solutions you might not have considered on your own.

4. The Role of Empathy

Empathy is often overlooked in leadership, it’s essential for building strong, collaborative teams. As leaders we cannot lose sight of the fact that we’re not just managing tasks, we are leading people. Understanding their challenges, motivations, and needs creates a sense of connection and trust which allows you to unlock new levels of performance and fulfilment for them.

During my tenures as a CEO, I aspired to know my team beyond their roles. Small gestures of empathy went a long way in creating a positive work environment. Fundamentally we all want to feel valued and empathy is a major contributor to that.

5. The Necessity of Continuous Learning

Leadership is a journey, not a destination. I have long recognised that learning never stops. Working with organisations around the world as a coach and mentor exposes me to new ideas, strategies, and practices. This constant exposure to best practices and lessons from other leaders experiences fuels my growth, knowledge and enhances my ability as a coach and mentor.

6. The Impact of Gratitude

Gratitude is a simple yet powerful tool in leadership. Recognising and appreciating your team’s efforts and expressing that appreciation boosts morale, fosters loyalty, and strengthens relationships.

In my leadership journey, I made it a point to celebrate wins, large and small. A handwritten personal note of thanks, a text or even a simple acknowledgment in a team meeting can have a profound impact.

Why these lessons matter

Leadership is a balance of vision and execution, empathy and resilience, listening and guiding. The lessons I am seeking to share in this (and the following episode, it will be two parts) are not theoretical rhetoric preached from an ivory tower. Rather they are learned through lived experience, some of it painful.

I hope that by sharing these lessons and insights from my personal leadership journey I can play a small part in supporting your continued growth and development.
